IKEA is giving the much-talked-about donut lamp a smart makeover. What was announced today is CES 2026IKEA Varmblixt is the latest smart home release from the iconic furniture brand, and we think it’s an instant classic.
Created in collaboration with Dutch artist and designer Sabine Marcelis, the new and improved Varmblixt lamp is color-changing and dimmable, can be controlled remotely, and gently changes between a variety of custom hues. The IKEA Varmblixt is available as both a wall light and a table lamp, costs $99, and will be available from April 2026.
Hmm…donuts
When first switched on, the donut lamp automatically switches between 12 preset colors in a subtly changing tone, but when combined with the IKEA Home Smart app you can choose from over 40 shades and adjust both the intensity and dimming of the light.
“We spent a lot of time fine-tuning the transitions between carefully selected colors,” says Sabine Marcelis. “What’s unique about this lamp is that the color transitions are not abrupt, but rather move through all the hues very smoothly to the next color. The light moves slowly through the colors, changing the color of the space.”
What else is new?
As part of the collaboration, IKEA will also sell a smart version of its $149 Varmblixt pendant light, this time focusing on white light and sensitively switching between light shades. Like the donut, you can control it with the included remote control or as part of your smart home setup.
The entire product line is built on Matter standards and can be combined with a variety of smart home systems, making it easy to combine with your existing setup.
IKEA also unveiled 21 new smart home gadgets in November, signaling a broader move into the smart home market.
We’ll be at the front of the line to test the new Varmblixt lights ahead of their April 2026 release.
