A pioneering medical system in Tianjin has treated about 4,500 elderly patients with femoral neck fractures in its first year, signaling a potential change in the way China manages “life-ending fractures.”

Tianjin Elderly Hip Fracture Center reported that more than 40% of patients underwent surgery within the critical 48-hour “golden window.” This is double the rate recorded in Tianjin 10 years ago. Data suggest that rapid intervention models significantly reduce the risk of first-year mortality associated with hip fractures in older adults by 30%.

Xu Weiguo, secretary of the Tianjin Hospital Party Committee, which oversees the center, said this progress is due to the multidisciplinary team treatment model pioneered by the hospital, which has addressed critical problems such as slow consultations, delayed surgeries, and high complication rates in hip fractures among the elderly.
